Every mountain biker remembers their first race.

The nervous wait at the start gate. The sound of freehubs echoing through the trees. The dust hanging in the air after the rider ahead disappears around the next corner.

Now imagine an entire week built around that feeling.

That was the Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival.

Back in 2014, when mountain biking in India was still finding its identity, the idea was simple; create an event that wasn't just about racing.

It had to be a celebration of the sport. A place where downhill racers, cross-country riders, BMX athletes, photographers, brands, volunteers and spectators could all call home for a few days.

The inspiration came from the legendary Crankworx, but the goal was never to recreate what already existed.

India deserved something of its own. And there was only one place that made sense.

Manali (Himachal Pradesh) - The Mountain Biking Capital of India.

Nestled deep in the Himalayas, with endless singletrack, alpine forests, steep ridgelines and terrain that constantly tests both rider and machine, Manali offered everything mountain biking could ask for.

Long before destination riding became a trend, these trails were already delivering unforgettable days in the saddle.

For one week every year, Manali transformed.

Bike racks filled every hotel. Riders from across India rolled into town, joined by international athletes eager to experience racing in the Himalayas. Every café became a post-ride meeting spot, every conversation revolved around tyre choice, suspension setup, line selection or who had the fastest split through the rock garden.

The racing was only part of the story.

The people made the festival.

Three Events. Three Different Ways to Ride.

The Himalayan BMX Comp in collaboration with SharpTune, brought flatland riding into the heart of Manali. Held in the middle of town, it introduced spectators to a discipline where balance, precision and creativity mattered just as much as raw athleticism. For many, it was their first time witnessing flatland BMX at such a high level.

The Himalayan Trails n Dust Mountain Bike Challenge, originally launched in 2010, represented the endurance side of the sport. Riders disappeared into Manali's backcountry, tackling lung-burning climbs, technical traverses and demanding descents before finally returning exhausted, muddy and smiling.

Then came the event everyone had travelled for.

The Himalayan Downhill Mountain Bike Trophy.

Held at Solang Valley in partnership with Ski Himalayas, the downhill track delivered everything gravity riders love: high speeds, loose corners, steep gradients, natural drops and absolutely no room for mistakes.

It wasn't polished. It wasn't predictable. It was mountain biking in its purest form.

Beyond the Tape

The festival wasn't built around podiums alone.

In 2016 and 2017, the Himalayan Photo Comp was introduced, encouraging photographers to tell the story of mountain biking through their own lenses. Supported by f-stop Gear, it recognised the people who spend entire weekends hanging off cliffs, lying in the dirt and waiting hours for a single perfect frame.

Because every iconic mountain bike event deserves equally iconic photographs.

Racing With Something on the Line

Winning meant more than standing on a podium.

Cash prizes were awarded across the festival's competitive events, attracting some of the strongest riders in the country and pushing the level of racing higher with every edition. From first-time racers to seasoned competitors, everyone arrived knowing that every second counted.

When the Racing Ended...

...the festival really began.

As the sun disappeared behind the Himalayan peaks, race bikes were leaned against walls, helmets swapped for hoodies and the day's fastest lines became the night's biggest stories.

Cold beers appeared. Music got louder. Campfires burned longer.

Riders who had been battling each other on the course only hours earlier sat together, laughed together and planned the next day's ride.

Because mountain biking has always been about more than competition.

It's about community.

More Than Just an Event

Word travelled quickly.

The Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival was featured in national media and found its way into respected mountain bike publications around the world. Suddenly, riders outside India were discovering something many locals had always known.

The Himalayas weren't just beautiful. They were made for mountain bikes.

Four Years That Left a Mark

From 2014 through 2017, the festival grew with every passing year.

More riders. More spectators. More brands. More stories.

But building a festival like this demanded more than passion.

Every course marker, medical crew, shuttle vehicle, volunteer, cash prize, rider welcome kit and finish-line celebration required months of planning and significant investment. While the community kept growing, long-term sponsorship never quite grew at the same pace.

Rather than dilute the experience or lower the standard that riders had come to expect, the decision was made to pause the festival after its fourth edition.

Not because the passion disappeared.

But because the vision deserved to be done properly.

The People Behind the Finish Line

No festival happens because of one person.

Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival - Manali, Himachal Pradesh - INDIA

The Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival existed because of an army of passionate people who believed Indian mountain biking deserved its own stage.

To every volunteer who gave up weekends.

To every friend who lifted, carried, built, fixed, taped, cleaned and solved problems before anyone else even knew they existed.

To the course builders who shaped trails. To the marshals who stood for hours in the sun.

To the medics, mechanics, photographers, videographers, announcers, timing crew and every unseen hand behind the scenes...

This festival belongs to you as much as anyone.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to the partners who believed in the dream: Woodland, Ski Himalayas, Trek Bikes, Firefox Bikes, Track & Trail, FSA, Lazer Sport, f-stop Gear, Loose Riders, Haul Apparel and Psynyde Bikes. Your support helped create something far bigger than a race weekend, it helped shape a chapter in Indian mountain biking.

Some Trails Never Truly End

The finish arch came down. The tape disappeared. The timing clocks stopped. Nature reclaimed the corners.

But if you walk those trails today, they're still there.

Waiting.

Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival - Manali, Himachal Pradesh - INDIA

Maybe the next rider who rolls into Manali won't know what happened on those mountains.

Maybe they won't know who stood on those podiums. Or who sprayed the champagne.... errr... Beers. Or who stayed up until 2 a.m. fixing a broken bike so someone else could race the next morning.

But the mountains remember.

Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival - Manali, Himachal Pradesh - INDIA

And so do the people who were there. Some stories don't end with a finish line.

Sometimes...they're just waiting for another start gate.

The Next Chapter

If you're a brand, tourism board, event partner or someone who believes in the future of mountain biking in India, we'd love to hear from you.

Let's build the next Himalayan Mountain Bike Festival...together.
